Like many of his contemporaries Ward took evident delight in ramshackle picturesque architecture and the opportunity they offered to explore contrasting textures and materials.

Chiseldon in Wiltshire was the home of Ward’s friends Henry Bullock and his wife Arabella, who was rector of Castle Easton and vicar of Chiseldon. There are other drawings by Ward of Chiseldon which are dated August 1822.
