This elegant drawing shows a fascinating side to Rowlandson’s work. The figure of the Virgin is classically posed, probably derived from a known composition by an old master. The fluid line and careful delineation underscores the breadth of Rowlandson’s interests. Although known principally for his work as a caricaturist, the present sheet is an instructive example of his appreciation of classical compositions.
