This catalogue is a representative sample of the magnificent group of British romantic drawings formed in the decades after the Second World War by Walter Brandt. Brandt was a pioneering collector of neo-classical and romantic drawings, a fact recognised by the number of sheets he lent to an exhibition curated by David Irwin at Ickworth House in 1969 British neo-classical art. Brandt’s accumulation of the boldly worked, monochrome drawings of George Romney, Henry Fuseli, John Flaxman, John Hamilton Mortimer and the so-called Master of the Giants, in part reflects opportunity, he was buying at a moment when this material was widely available. Great drawings by these artists are now rare, this selection from the Brandt Collection therefore offers a new generation the opportunity to enjoy works by these masters.
